Today, it is very important to talk to teenagers about contraception, as many of them have a rushed start to their sex life. On the other hand, they are the most vulnerable population to suffer from sexually transmitted infections (STIs) that can affect their lives, in addition to undesired pregnancies. Dr. Bergica Martinez, gynecologist at Clinica Ricardo Palma, gives us more insight on the subject.
What kind of information should be given to teenagers?
The first places where this topic should be discussed are: school and home. Unfortunately, very few parents today provide their children with this information; however, it is never too late to start.
Our specialist recommends starting the dialogue naturally, in a comfortable environment for both of you, asking them if they know about STIs and how to prevent them. In addition, you can offer them an appointment with a specialist to clear up all their doubts, as this is a better option instead of just receiving the information they discover on the internet.
Remember that a good sexual education is key to orient the youth in a timely manner. This is one of the greatest challenges for today’s society in which we live and for healthcare personnel.
