Stomach pains are frequent when our children are young and may occur suddenly. However, it is necessary to know what could be the cause of this pain and which cases merit a visit to a specialist. Dr. Jessica Alvarez, a pediatrician in our clinic, gives us more details about this important topic for parents.
What conditions can cause abdominal pain?
The causes of abdominal pain in pediatrics are varied. They could range from constipation to appendicitis.
When is medical care required?
One of the most frequent reasons for consultation in the emergency room is gastrointestinal infections (diarrhea), constipation, or food poisoning. Less frequent but more dangerous causes are surgical conditions such as appendicitis or intussusception, the latter being a serious and rare disorder that occurs when a part of the intestine slips into an adjacent part of the intestine.
In case your son or daughter presents intense and continuous abdominal pain, frequent vomiting, refusal to eat, or decay, you should take him or her to a health center to be evaluated. Remember not to self-medicate, since analgesics could overlap the abdominal symptoms.
What tests are indicated?
Depending on the physical examination, the pediatrician may order a complete blood count, stool or urine test, ultrasound, or abdominal CT scan.
