Eye care is a fundamental part of our health. Therefore, today, when we are more exposed to different electronic devices that damage our eyesight, such as computers, televisions and smartphones, it is important to find different ways to care for our eyes. On this occasion, Dr. Álvaro Rivera, ophthalmologist at Clinica Ricardo Palma, gives us some recommendations to take care of our eyes.
The following recommendations will help improve your eye health:
- Give up smoking
Cigarettes increase the possibility of suffering from macular degeneration (loss of vision), dry eye, cataracts, problems with the optic nerve, among other conditions, by 6 times. Furthermore, diabetic smokers are more likely to develop complex diabetic retinopathy.
- Do not use old makeup or of unknown origin
Using poor or unsecured makeup can cause eye infections. It is recommended to renew the mascara and shadows every 6 months approximately. These products are for personal use and should never be shared.
- Maintain adequate nutrition
An adequate diet always helps to maintain good health, including our eyes. A diet low in fat and rich in fruits, vegetables, and nuts decreases the risk of macular problems. Carrots, blueberries, eggs, spinach, broccoli, peppers, and nuts are great visual allies.
- Wear sunglasses
Wearing sunglasses with ultraviolet protection is essential to take care of the eyes, in this way you can avoid diseases such as cataracts, eye cancer, carnosity, among others.
- Avoid spending several hours in front of electronic devices
It is important for the eyes to rest. Many times, it is inevitable to spend hours in front of a screen, but it is advisable to take a few minutes to look in another direction or close your eyes to rest. Similarly, children between the ages of 2 and 5 should not use electronic devices for more than 1 hour and always under the supervision of an adult.
Having an annual control with the ophthalmologist can prevent and detect disabling eye diseases early.
