Roberto Piccini, Gastroenterologist of our clinic, gives us insights into this condition and how we can prevent it.
Due to the state of constant tension and stress we are living in these times of pandemic it is more frequent for men and women to suffer severe gastritis.
What is gastritis?
It is an inflammation of the gastric mucosa. It is caused by bacterial infections, frequent use of certain medications, high alcohol intake, poor eating habits, stress, among others.
Symptoms of gastritis include: burning in the stomach, heartburn, a feeling of fullness, inflammation of the belly, nausea, loss of appetite, reflux, pain in the upper abdomen, and other symptoms that can indicate if you are suffering from this disease.
Like any disease, gastritis must be diagnosed to receive adequate treatment; failure to do so can cause major complications such as stomach ulcers or bleeding.
How to prevent it?
You should have a fixed schedule for meals. Avoid spicy, acid, fried foods, and garlic, also cigarettes, and alcohol. Do sports and relaxation exercises. Evaluate the possibility of changing medications in case you take them frequently. All these recommendations can help to keep this disease under control.
When you should go to the specialist?
When there is severe abdominal pain or traces of blood in the stool. It is very important to write down your symptoms and when they started. Identify what situation may be causing you a lot of stress and make a list of the medicines or supplements you are taking so that the speciesist can provide a more accurate diagnosis and treatment.
If required, the Gastroenterologist may order complementary tests such as a breath test to find out if you are a carrier of helicobacter pylori or an upper endoscopy or x-ray of the upper digestive system.
