It is pathology of unknown cause, progressive, rare and has no cure. The diagnosis is a complex process, not a simple answer. The Pneumologist must perform several evaluations that include: thorough medical history, physical examination, laboratory tests, lung dysfunction and tomographies.
The main risk factor, as in other degenerative diseases, is age and is usually more common in men. Like all progressive pulmonary pathology, the symptoms are cough and shortness of breath. In advanced stage there is weight loss and severe commitment to do things independently.
Medicines only slow the progress of the illness, giving patients more time of an acceptable functional status. It is important to get vaccinated to prevent infections. Lung transplantation is an option in countries where that is possible.
