“Our Pediatrics service provides guidance to parents so that they can implement early hygienic-dietary measures to prevent constipation. The treatment of this condition consists of osmotic laxatives such as polyethylene glycol (PEG), lactulose, magnesium salts, among others. With a good evaluation and a thorough physical examination, the diagnosis can be made without the need for any additional test”, says Dr. Jessica Alvarez, pediatrician at our clinic.
What is constipation?
It is the delay or difficulty in defecation. The frequency and consistency of normal stools vary with the age of the children and the diet, they can also vary considerably from child to child.
Some criteria and symptoms that indicate constipation:
Hygienic-dietary measures and recommendations to prevent constipation:
When should I my child to the pediatrician?
If the child has a good appetite, no vomiting or abdominal pain, it can be kept at home using the indicated hygienic-dietary measures. If the child has constant or bilious vomiting, bloating and severe abdominal pain, refusal of food, fever, or rectal bleeding, a pediatrician’s assessment will be essential.
Remember, no treatment will be effective unless complete evacuation is achieved. This will require a lot of patience and effort on the part of the child and the parents. Proper guidance for both of you will be key to successfully combat this condition.
