Since adolescence is a time of many physical, hormonal and emotional changes, many parents wonder when is the right time for their daughters to have a first gynecological checkup, as well as many concerns about what it will consist of. Dr. José Luis Mercado, a gynecologist at our clinic, provides us with valuable information on this topic.
What is the importance of this first gynecological check-up?
The first exploration is very relevant since it can confirm or rule out the normal development of the genital apparatus, diagnose the existence of possible pathologies (menstrual disorders, absence of the period or pain during it, etc.) and even take samples and/or or carry out complementary examinations, if necessary. It will also be important during this consultation to establish preventive strategies and guide the adolescent in her gynecological sphere.
What does this first evaluation consist of?
Although it is true that there is no specific age to carry out the first gynecological visit, this can be given in the event of a possible gynecological pathology in the adolescent or to carry out an asymptomatic gynecological check-up. The first consultation may only consist of a conversation between the adolescent and the specialist, where they will get to know each other and answer many questions about what to expect as they grow older, menstruation, changes in the body, among other issues related to the sexual health of the teenager. In addition, some general tests could be performed and/or a vaccine administered.
What type of tests are carried out?
During these exams, the adolescent can count on the company of her parents, a relative or a nurse.
