Fatty liver disease occurs in people with metabolic disorders such as obesity, diabetes, high triglycerides, and hypertension. Its prevention reduces the risk of liver cirrhosis or liver cancer.

For years, liver biopsy has been the reference method for quantifying liver fibrosis (fat in the liver causes fibrosis); however, now Clínica Ricardo Palma has Fibroscan® elastography, which is a non-invasive alternative to quantify the severity of fibrosis and liver fat.
