Colon Cancer can be prevented; however, it is one of the neoplasms with the highest incidence in our country. 90% of colon tumors come from polyps that have grown out of order. Our specialty of Gastroenterology has techniques such as NBI with magnification and electronic staining, which detects potentially malignant lesions no matter how small, even the ones measuring 3mm.

Commemorating World Colon Cancer Day today, Dr. Fernando Salazar, gastroenterologist at our clinic, gives us some information to take into account:

• Polyps are widely detected by colonoscopy, a simple procedure performed under sedation
• Colonoscopy not only locates small lesions, but through it they are removed to be analyzed by Pathology
• Colon check-ups should be started from the age of 50, even without presenting symptoms
• If you have a close relative who has had colon cancer, the check-up should be given starting at age 40, or 10 years before the age at which the relative was diagnosed with cancer
• Colonoscopy should be done every 5 years
• Some warning signs are: persistent change in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation) or stool consistency. Also, rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, and persistent abdominal discomfort (cramps, gas, or pain)
• If you have gastrointestinal symptoms between the ages of 40 and 50, see a gastroenterologist to determine if you require a preventive exam that can save your life
