Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that causes bronchial obstruction triggered by a variety of stimuli (allergens). In susceptible individuals, this inflammation produces recurrent cases of wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing, especially at night or early in the morning. Dr. Fatima Ortega, a pulmonologist at our clinic, provides more information on this topic.
Can I have a pet if I am asthmatic?
- Many people with asthma are allergic to animals. In fact, they are allergic to the proteins present in the dander, saliva and urine of dogs, cats and birds. Therefore, it is essential that they have an allergy test before getting a pet. This way, they will know if they are sensitive to any animal.
- If the result is positive, it means that when the person has contact with certain animals he/she may suffer an asthmatic crisis or worsen the symptoms of the disease. On the other hand, if it is negative, you can have a pet, but following some guidelines so as not to complicate your health.
What preventive measures to follow?
People with asthma should avoid having pets with feathers or fur (such as dogs or cats, for example). If the pet triggers symptoms of the condition it is recommended:
- You must take allergy medication or get allergy shots, in addition to using the drugs prescribed by your specialist.
- Do not allow your pet in the room.
- Play with your pet, but try not to hug or kiss it.
- Clean your room thoroughly and get rid of carpets or curtains.
- Keep your bedroom free of dust.
- Have someone else wash and brush your pet once a week (both dogs and cats).
- Make sure everyone in your family washes their hands after touching the pet.
- If you have a caged bird or other animal, remove the cage from your room. Make sure your pet is always in the cage and ask someone else to help clean it every day. Also, make sure the cage is not in a drafty place. If it is next to the heater or air conditioner, it could blow pet allergens around the room.
