What is oral aphtha?

They are round or oval white or yellow injuries, surrounded by a red border. Aphtha are among the most common oral lesions, they are not contagious and usually appear on the gums, walls opposite the cheeks, lips and tongue.

What symptoms and discomfort can they cause?

Aphtha are very painful and can make it difficult for children to eat and hydrate properly. Sometimes, they are usually accompanied by fever, pharyngitis and swollen lymph nodes.

What is the treatment for aphtha?

In most cases, the pain subsides within 1 to 2 weeks. In the case of very large aphtha that cause a lot of pain, the use of analgesics, aloe vera gel, hyaluronic acid and gentian violet is recommended.

• Practice good oral hygiene habits, brushing well after every meal and flossing once a day.
• Follow a healthy diet, consisting of a diet rich in vitamins, with fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
• If your child has aphtha, he/she must be properly hydrated, avoiding the consumption of citrus, hot and salty foods. Also, the child shall not stop brushing their teeth, but it must be done carefully to avoid rubbing the aphtha area and causing pain, using a soft brush in order to prevent tissue irritation. Proper oral hygiene will promote healing and prevent gingival inflammation.
