“As a medical oncologist, it is exciting to talk about advances in oncology treatments and their beneficial effects. Oncology is constantly evolving and, recently, we have been able to evidence significant progress that offers new hope to our patients,” says Dr. Luis Orrego, an oncologist at our clinic, who gives us more detail about these alternatives.”
Targeted and precision therapies. Targeted and precision therapies have transformed cancer treatment by targeting specific characteristics of cancer cells. For example, the combination of dabrafenib and trametinib has demonstrated efficacy for tumors with mutations in the BRAF gene, blocking the signaling pathways that promote tumor growth and reducing tumor size. Precision oncology goes further by personalizing treatment according to the complete genetic profile of the patient’s tumor, improving efficacy and minimizing side effects.
Immunotherapy. Immunotherapy is another field that has seen significant advances. Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapies are a promising example. These therapies modify the patient’s own T cells so that they can recognize and attack cancer cells. Although initially used in hematological cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma, research is underway to expand their use to other types of cancer.
Telemedicine. Telemedicine has also had a significant impact on cancer treatment. It has allowed patients to continue their consultations and follow-ups without the need for in-person visits, especially during the pandemic and for those with travel difficulties.
New drugs and administration methods. Advances in drug administration methods are also improving the treatment experience for patients. For example, we now have drugs that have improved their mode of administration, offering alternatives to the intravenous route.
For consideration: New oncology treatments are opening promising avenues in the fight against cancer. With the combination of targeted therapies, immunotherapy, mRNA vaccines and improvements in drug delivery, we are entering a new era of oncology treatment that is more effective and less invasive for patients. However, it is crucial to continue research and development to overcome current challenges and make these treatments accessible to all patients.
