Myths, fears and misinformation are part of a phenomenon that is often unavoidable: hair loss. What causes it and how to take care of it?
Hair falls out for different reasons. Stress, hormonal changes, aging and the consumption of some type of medication are some of them. However, the main factor is genetic. Sandro Tucto, dermatologist at Clinica Ricardo Palma, explains it this way: “When we see that it is a shared characteristic in several family members, it is due to a genetic factor. This is given by the hormonal factor that is put into operation from DHT (dihydro testosterone), which sensitizes the hair follicle in the frontal and parietal areas. Consequently, this causes toxicity, explaining why hair gradually thins and weakens.” Although it was previously believed that there was no real treatment to stop baldness, Dr. Tucto points out that this is now a myth. “Currently there are dermatological treatments of various types that stop and recover baldness.” Among them, mesotherapy stands out as a preventive (small subcutaneous injections are applied that biologically activate the hair cells) and the Fuss technique (hair micrograft technique).
