During the cold season, it is common to feel a sore throat, especially when sleeping with your mouth open or drinking cold beverages. Dr. Fatima Ortega, pulmonologist of our clinic, gives us valuable recommendations to learn how to combat and prevent this discomfort that sometimes is very painful and uncomfortable.
What to do to fight a sore throat?
- Stay hydrated. Drink warm or room temperature fluids to keep your throat from drying out.
- Get plenty of rest. Getting enough sleep is key to keeping your immune system strong and preventing all kinds of infections.
- Use a humidifier in your home. Dry air can irritate the throat and the entire airway.
- Gargle with warm salt water in the morning or evening.
- Lemon mint or eucalyptus tea may help soothe a sore throat. Avoid sweetening to avoid consuming empty calories.
- Sucking on candy or chewing sugarless gum generates more saliva production. This keeps the throat lubricated.
- The use of over-the-counter throat sprays or pain relievers is also very helpful if you feel discomfort. However, self-medication is never an option; it is extremely risky, as it can delay seeking medical attention, worsen the condition and reduce the chance of a speedy recovery. Although it may seem exaggerated to you, the use of over-the-counter medications can have serious side effects on your health. If the days go by and the discomfort continues, go to your family doctor so that he/she can recommend the most appropriate treatment for your case.
