Winter officially began in Peru on Saturday, June 20 at 4:43 p.m. and will end on September 22 at 8:30 a.m. The deputy director of weather forecasts of the Senamhi, Grinia Avalos, reported that the temperature will drop more than usual throughout the coastal strip of the country. “The sea will be colder and this is directly associated with the behavior of temperatures”, explained the specialist.
In Lima, according to the Senamhi forecast, the average during nights will be 14° C and in the day 19° C; while the lowest fluctuations will reach 12° C. In the Andean region and the jungle, temperatures will be slightly above normal.
The drop in temperatures influences the proliferation of respiratory diseases, especially viral infections, such as influenza and parainfluenza, also bacterial infections, such as pneumonia, explained Oswaldo Jave, Pulmonologist of Dos de Mayo Hospital.
Julio Cachay, Infectologist of Clínica Ricardo Palma specified that the increased humidity allows viruses to stay suspended in the air longer.
Children, older adults, patients with chronic respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, or some immunosuppressive condition are the most vulnerable.
