“Spirometry is a useful, accessible and well-performing tool, essential for the diagnosis and follow-up of many respiratory diseases, including asthma, which affects 10% of the child population. In addition, it is key to adjust medication appropriately and satisfactorily control the respiratory disease,” says Dr. Fatima Ortega, a pulmonologist at our clinic, who provides valuable information about this test.
What is spirometry?
Spirometry is a simple and painless test that evaluates lung function, allowing to objectively determine lung capacity (amount of air that the lungs can hold) and detect if there is any limitation, either by airway involvement, lung, or external causes to the thorax.
In which cases is it indicated in children?
Any child older than 6 years who presents persistent cough, respiratory distress (dyspnea) without established cause, or wheezing (whistling in the chest) should undergo spirometry to clarify and establish the diagnosis. It is also indicated in the follow-up of many respiratory diseases such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, among others.
How is spirometry performed in children?
What indications should be followed before spirometry is performed?
Once the spirometry has been performed, the patient will be able to carry out normal activities without restriction.
