“An umbilical hernia occurs when part of the intra-abdominal contents (frequently intestines) protrudes near the navel due to a weakness in this area. It is corrected with surgery by closing the defect and reinforcing it with a mesh, if necessary,” explains Dr. Billy Fuentes, general surgeon at our clinic.
What should be considered before performing umbilical hernia surgery?
Before the procedure, the patient must undergo a complete medical evaluation and, depending on each case, general or local anesthesia may be used.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure lasts between 40 and 60 minutes. Once completed, the patient is taken to the rest area until he/she recovers from the anesthesia and is then transferred to his/her room.
