“An umbilical hernia occurs when part of the intra-abdominal contents (frequently intestines) protrudes near the navel due to a weakness in this area. It is corrected with surgery by closing the defect and reinforcing it with a mesh, if necessary,” explains Dr. Billy Fuentes, general surgeon at our clinic.

What should be considered before performing umbilical hernia surgery?

Before the procedure, the patient must undergo a complete medical evaluation and, depending on each case, general or local anesthesia may be used.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure lasts between 40 and 60 minutes. Once completed, the patient is taken to the rest area until he/she recovers from the anesthesia and is then transferred to his/her room.

What does the postoperative period consist of?

• The postoperative period is relatively simple. The patient will need to wear a girdle and the next day he/she will be able to resume daily activities, but following the doctor’s recommendations.
• During the first 24 hours, the patient should eat soft foods such as boiled fish, soups, mashed potatoes, rice, eggs or yogurt.
• Coffee, tea and alcoholic beverages should be avoided. The following days, the normal diet can be resumed, although it is recommended to increase water intake.
• To avoid pain, painkillers are prescribed, which must be taken at the prescribed times to avoid discomfort.

What kind of additional care does the patient need to follow after umbilical hernia surgery?

• As for personal hygiene, the patient may take a shower when instructed to do so by the physician. To do so, the patient should remove the gauze covering the wound, clean it with soap and water, and dry it without rubbing, with small touches using a clean towel. Then the patient must cover the wound again with a sterile gauze that he/she will hold with paper tape. After 48 hours it is not necessary to cover the lesion.
• Regarding the limitations of daily activities, these vary according to the patient’s evolution; but in general it is advisable: rest for 24 hours, do not drive until indicated by the specialist, limit tasks that require physical effort or heavy lifting, avoid long walks and climbing stairs, and do not return to work until the patient is discharged. In case you want to cough, put your hand on the wound and press lightly.
